FNC Speaker inks MoUs with women speakers of parliaments of Fiji, Gabon, Peru and Andean Parliament

ABU DHABI, 29th December, 2016 (WAM) – In an effort to enhance co-operation in various fields, particularly in the parliamentary sphere, Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), has signed a number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with women speakers of the parliaments of Fiji, Gabon, Peru, as well as Andean Parliament.
The MoUs were aimed at promoting consultation in areas of mutual interest, such as security and stability, human rights protection, the fight against terrorism and extremism, and respect for international conventions.
The MoUs also covered co-operation in the fields of sustainable development, innovation and exchange of knowledge and diplomatic expertise.
The MoUs will help in forging better bilateral relationships between the Federal National Council and the respective parliaments of these countries, Dr. Al Qubaisi said, underlining the importance of these agreements.
She also held discussions with the women speakers of these parliaments about the outcome of the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, held in Abu Dhabi recently under the theme "United for shaping the future."
Dr. Al Qubaisi referred to the "Abu Dhabi Declaration" that called for the need to unify efforts to face current challenges and in the future. This will help enhance the quality of life and facilitate projects aimed at ensuring sustainable development.
The Abu Dhabi Declaration also emphasised the importance of youth in finding solutions for many issues.
Dr. Al Qubaisi also spoke about the role women can play in the political arena and the challenges they face in their professional and political careers. She underscored that such meetings can help immensely since they facilitate the exchange of expertise, visions and ideas.
She narrated the way the parliamentary mechanism had evolved over time in the UAE, and affirmed that the FNC was keen to shore up its act further and stay in step with modern developments.
Speaking about the FNC’s strategy between 2016 and 2021, she said it was aimed at enhancing political empowerment, as enunciated by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2005.
The meeting also featured a presentation about various international and regional developments.
The chairwomen of these parliaments praised the effective role that the UAE parliament played and its successful hosting of the global summit.
Edith Fernandez, President of the Andean Parliament, spoke about the importance of the co-operation between the two parties and the need to promote bilateral parliamentary relations.
The world was passing through a critical phase, and violence, terrorism and extremism represent a real threat to the world, she said while thanking the government and the people of the UAE for their effective role in the quest for world peace and security.
Luz Salgado, President of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, also praised the world summit, which dealt with issues such as pollution levels, implication of climate change and ways to achieve sustainable economic development across world. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395305236816.html
