German Scholar Urges Iran To Lead Global Anti-violence Campaign

Berlin, Jan 8, IRNA -- A German Islam scholar of Turkish origin called on Iran to be the vanguard in the campaign against global extremism and violence. Speaking to IRNA following last months adoption of a UN resolution based on a proposal by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani for a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE), Yavuz Ozuguz said, Iran has to take a lead role in tackling extremism and violence around the world. He added, As long as I know the Islamic of Republic, it has always stood against extremism and terror. In fact, Iran has been the worlds greatest victim of terrorism. Ozoguz cited the killings of Iranian nuclear scientists as one example where the country had been victimized by terror. He also lashed out at western politicians for being silent on the murder of Iran's nuclear scientists. Ozoguz hailed the Iranian WAVE initiative, labeling it excellent. The UN General Assembly voted by consensus in December to approve the WAVE Act, calling on all nations around the world to denounce violence and extremism. Under the resolution, the General Assembly would urge all member states to unite against violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, as well as sectarian violence./end
