Gunmen Kill MWM Leader In Pakistan Karachi In Target Attack

Islamabad, Nov 7, IRNA – Unidentified gunmen shot dead a Shiite activist and another man in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on Tuesday, police said. Agha Aftab Haider Jaffery, a leader of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and another man were killed when the gunmen, riding a motorcycle, opened fire on their car in cantonment area of Karachi. The gunmen fled after the incident, witnesses said. No group claimed responsibility. A police officer termed the incident as a target attack. MWM condemned the killing of its activists and announced a three-day mourning against the incident. The MWM leaders reached the hospital after the attack. They said the law enforcement agencies have failed to protect the people and curb sectarian attacks. Karachi is in the grip of target attacks, which have claimed many people in recent months. The Supreme Court said last week that the law enforcement agencies have failed to end such attacks. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, giving details about violence in Karachi told the parliament in September that a total of 1,363 people have lost their lives at the hands of target killers during the past five years. Giving a breakdown of the figure, Malik said that 104 people had been killed in year 2008, 160 in 2009, 373 in 2010, 478 in 2011 and 248 so far in 2012./end
