International anti-corruption meeting in Kazakhstan

Astana, September 17, 2009 (Khabar) - 130 delegates representing various state bodies, business and international organisations from around 50 countries have gathered in Astana to take part in an international conference devoted to the fight against corruption and the issues of increasing the effectiveness of state management. The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev took part in the opening of this large forum.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- Our law on state service, the judicial system and law enforcement bodies has a tangible anti-corruption character. In improving our system of state management, we are trying to make it more compact and transparent.

The increase in the effectiveness of state management helps to successfully fight corruption. In this regard, Kazakhstan has already developed some projects. For instance, the Republic has the Electronic Governance programme thanks to which people have the opportunity of getting various certificates and handing in declarations.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- It is necessary to raise society against corruption so people don’t even think about giving or taking a bribe. It is very difficult to achieve this. We need to bring up our children with the thought that corruption is bad. Doing such work, the government should be assisted by the civil society including parties, NGO’s and the mass media.

Today, Kazakhstan has wide experience in fighting corruption and the Republic is ready to share it with other states. The country adopted a nationwide anti-corruption action plan. Moreover, the Republic is implementing its second state programme for fighting corruption and it is scheduled to finish in 2011.

Aart de Geus, Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development:
- It is a great honour for us to have our conference headed by the President. Kazakhstan is a rapidly developing country which is the regional leader while Astana is an important symbol of the growth and ambitions of your country. We are happy that Kazakhstan’s administration understands the wide importance of the topics raised today.

The international conference will work in Astana’s Palace of Independence for three days and its participants speak about significance and importance of this meeting.

Husein Kaimak, head of department on state procurements in Turkey:
- Our work here is very effective and I think we will be glad to return to homeland and tell about new methods of corruption preventing.

Aaron Ringera, director of anti-corruption commission of Kenya:
- It is a good conference, first anti-corruption conference and it was well organized and opened by the President himself and I think it shows strong political way of President of Kazakhstan.
