Iranian mission assisting president of Arms Trade Treaty Conference

TEHRAN,July 8(MNA) - The mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations is assisting the president of the Arms Trade Treaty Conference in the general conduct of the business of the conference. The conference opened at UN Headquarters in New York on July 3 and will close on July 27. During the conference, negotiations will be carried out by the 193 member states of the UN over the Arms Trade Treaty, which is seen as the most important initiative ever regarding conventional arms regulation within the United Nations. In addition, hundreds of representatives from non-governmental organizations, public interest groups, the arms industry, media, and inter-governmental organizations are attending. The UN helps regulate the arms trade by supporting negotiations for a global arms trade treaty, making information available on arms transfers between countries through the UN Register of Conventional Arms, and by addressing the illicit trade in small arms.
