Joint efforts needed to fight terrorism - Kremlin spokesman

MOSCOW, June 25. /TASS/. Fighting international terrorism and extremism cannot be limited by the borders of one country, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, commenting on the results of yesterday’s meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Afghanistan’s former President Hamid Karzai. Peskov noted that the issue of fighting against terrorism, in particular in Afghanistan, was raised at the meeting. "In general, Russia is actively participating in international efforts on fighting terrorism," he reminded. "These efforts cannot be limited by one country - this is just pointless," Peskov noted, adding that "such efforts can only be joint." At yesterday’s meeting with Karzai, Putin noted that Russia is concerned with the situation in Afghanistan, where the Islamic State (IS) and Taliban are gaining ground and already control the considerable part of the territory. In particular, IS presence is confirmed in 25 provinces out of 34. Karzai explained that the support of external forces is behind the strengthening of the Islamic State terrorist organization. The former president said these forces use Afghanistan as a springboard to increase their influence in the region. Karzai said Russia and Afghanistan should focus join efforts on countering this threat. Read more
