King Abdullah II of Jordan describes relations with Russia as strategic, says Jordanian ambassador

MOSCOW, August 21. /TASS/. King Abdullah II of Jordan describes his country’s relations with Russia as strategic, with a special status in political, economic and humanitarian spheres, Jordanian Ambassador to Russia Amjad Odeh Adaileh said in an interview with TASS on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. "The new round of development in bilateral relations occurred in 1999 when King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein ascended the throne," he said. "Abdullah II understood the importance of strengthening relations with Russia and its leader, Vladimir Putin. King Abdullah II describes relations with Russia as strategic." "Over the past two decades, relations between the two nations have been developing rapidly to gain a special status in the spheres of politics, economy, culture, security and defense," the Jordanian diplomat said, adding that his country and Russia are cooperating with each other and with other nations "to fight against terrorist and extremism in all their manifestations." He noted that Moscow and Amman had maintained good relations in the earlier period as well. "Back then, the Soviet Union was also interested in establishing diplomatic relations with Jordan and its leader, bearing in mind the important role he was playing in the Middle East politics and in the efforts to maintain regional and global stability," the ambassador stressed. "Moscow appreciated the king’s wisdom and the sustainability of his policy." Amjad Odeh Adaileh noted Jordan is committed to dialogue and coordination with Russia as it relies on its major stabilizing role on the global arena. Diplomatic relations between Russia and Jordan were established on August 21, 1963. Read more
