Kuwait hails Iran’s humanitarian contributions to Syrians

TEHRAN,Feb.2(MNA) – The Kuwaiti foreign minister praised the Islamic Republic of Iran for its contributions to the International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria which was held in Kuwait on Wednesday.
Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Thursday.
The Iranian official hailed Kuwait’s initiative to host the conference to help Syria’s refugees. The two sides also discussed Tehran-Kuwait relations as well as Syria’s developments.
Amir-Abdollahian elaborated on Iran’s policies toward Syria and said that the homelessness of a number of Syrian people is a result of the actions of terrorist groups and a number of aimless armed groups.
High-level officials from 59 countries and a number of international organizations including a number of UN agencies attended the conference to mobilize $1.5 billion of financial resources to assist refugees and internally displaced Syrians.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who chaired the conference, said the UN would ensure that the funds are used effectively to meet the urgent life-saving needs of the Syrian people, the United Nation’s website reported.
According to the report, more than 60,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since the unrest began in Syria in early 2011. Recent months have witnessed an escalation in the conflict, which has also left more than 4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 2 million who have fled their homes and are now living without basic services.
