Lt. Gen. Ralph J. Jodice, Commander, Allied Air Component Command Headquarters Izmir, Turkey holds press conference

IZMIR (A.A) - 04.04.2011 - Lt. Gen. Ralph J. Jodice II, Commander, Allied Air Component Command Headquarters, Izmir, Turkey held a press conference via video teleconference on Monday.
Speaking at the press conference held in Naples, Italy, Lt. Gen. Jodice said that NATO assumed the control of air operations in Libya.
We will do everything possible so that innocent civilians in Libya do not get hurt, Jodice said.
The air operation, being conducted with our partners, will go into history as the first air combat operation, Jodice underlined.
The global intervention to the crisis in Libya carries a special meaning, Jodice said.
Turkey's civilian humanitarian assistance shows NATO's will to solve the Libyan problem through means other than the use of military force, Jodice said.
NATO began implementing an arms embargo and a no-fly zone in Libya on Thursday, March 31.

Speaking at the press conference held in Naples, Italy, Lt. Gen. Jodice said that they hoped the contributions of every country would continue in order to reach success in Libya.
As is known, Gaddafi's forces target the civilian population in Libya. We conduct our operation, in compliance with the relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions, to protect the civilians from Gaddafi forces, Jodice said.
Reminded by a journalist about remarks of U.S. President Barack Obama that the U.S would not be at the forefront of the operation in Libya, Jodice said that the U.S. continued to provide the necessary means and capacity required in the operation.
We use all the possible assistance offered by the 28 members (of NATO) in Libya, Jodice said.
Touching on a possible land operation in Libya, Lt. Gen. Jodice stressed that, to date, they did not receive any directives for such a land operation.
Allied Air Command Izmir is subordinate to Allied Joint Force Command Naples and is solely responsible for command and control, oversight, planning, coordination and execution of all air-related tasks in NATO's Southern Region. The command contributes to the security, peace, stability and territorial integrity of alliance member states throughout its area of functional responsibility.
