MONGOLIA TO CELEBRATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF KHALKH RIVER BATTLES

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A Cabinet meeting last Friday decided to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Khalkh River Battles this August. The celebration of the victory of the Mongolia-Soviet army over the Japanese Kwantung Army in the battlefield of Khalkh River will be held within goals to glorify efforts of the war veterans, to build up patriotism among the youth, as well as to strengthen traditional friendly relations with Russia. A working group led by Deputy Prime Minister D.Terbishdagva will be responsible for organizing the celebration events that include multi-level meetings, an international scientific forum and competitions. For the celebration, Mongolia-Soviet Fighters’ monument in the Zaisan Hill will be renovated and joint field exercises of armed forces of Mongolia and Russia will take place in northern Selenge province. The Battles of Khalk River constituted the decisive engagement of the undeclared Soviet–Japanese border conflicts fought among the Soviet Union, Mongolia and the Empire of Japan in 1939. The conflict was named after Khalkh River, which passes through the battlefield. In Japan, the decisive battle of the conflict is known as the Nomonhan Incident after a nearby village on the border between Mongolia and Manchuria. The battles resulted in the defeat of the Japanese Sixth Army.
