NAM backs Iran at IAEA meeting
TEHRAN, June 7 (MNA) - The Non-Aligned Movement issued a statement expressing support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.
The statement was read out by the Egyptian ambassador to the IAEA, who is the head of the NAM movement, at a meeting of the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna on Tuesday.
In the statement, NAM representatives at the meeting wrote that they are concerned about the fact that the UN nuclear watchdog has failed to provide Iran with documents regarding the “alleged (weapons) studies”, Press TV reported.
The movement also called for the dispute over Iran’s nuclear issue to be resolved through diplomatic channels.
According to the Trend News Agency, NAM also emphasized the basic and undeniable right of all countries to use nuclear energy meant for peaceful purposes without any kind of discrimination.
It also stated that any kind of attack or threat to attack against peaceful nuclear facilities is in violation of international law and the agency’s regulations and is condemned.
Israel has repeatedly threatened to launch strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The United States has also said that “all options are on the table” to stop Iran’s nuclear program.
As an International Atomic Energy Agency member and a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has the legal right to produce nuclear fuel for its research reactors and nuclear power plants.
