New Delhi Host Special ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

NEW DELHI, June 16 (Bernama) -- India is hosting a Special Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Foreign Ministers’ meeting in the country’s capital to mark the 30th anniversary of its ties and 10- year strategic partnership with the 10-member bloc. The two-day event starting today will see deliberations on initiatives to sustain economic recovery amid post-COVID-19 pandemic, which has created unprecedented losses and disruptions over all across the world and ways to further strengthen ASEAN and India ties in trade, investment and beyond. Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah arrived on Wednesday for the meet. India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar and Vivian Balakrishnan, Foreign Minister of Singapore, will co-chair the meeting. "Under the current global uncertainties, as we review our journey of the last 30 years and chart our path for the coming decades, it is important that we identify a new set of priorities while ensuring the early realisation of our ongoing initiatives," Jaishankar said in his opening remarks. "ASEAN's role today is perhaps more important than ever before given the geopolitical challenges and uncertainties that the world faces," he said. Saifuddin together with the other ASEAN Foreign Ministers will be also attending the 12th edition of the Delhi Dialogue themed “Breaking barriers, building bridges in Indo-Pacific”—in commemoration of ASEAN-India Friendship Year 2022. Under the theme “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges in Indo-Pacific”, Saifuddin will be delivering his remarks at the Ministerial Panel on Thirty Years of ASEAN-India Relations of the Delhi Dialogue XII, later today. -- BERNAMA
