OIC Foreign Ministers to meet in Turkey to help the Somali people
Jeddah (A.A) - August 10 - The Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will convene an emergency meeting at the level of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul on Wednesday, 17 August 2011 to be chaired by the OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu to discuss the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Somalia and its risks on African countries.
The OIC meeting comes in response to a call issued by Turkey in order to provide assistance for Somali people. It is expected to discuss possible ways and means of urgent intervention during the holy month of Ramadan to meet the needs of the displaced and those people affected by famine and drought which hit Somalia, described as being the worst in half a century,.
The OIC had earlier formed an OIC alliance to coordinate humanitarian action and relief in order to face up the humanitarian crisis in Somalia. The OIC Secretary General also launched a humanitarian campaign under the slogan of “Days of Giving”, which begun in the month of Ramadan. A media campaign was also launched in parallel with the humanitarian campaign to raise peoples’ awareness about the catastrophic conditions experienced by the affected people in Somalia.
The Secretary General had expressed his profound appreciation for the generous donation announced by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, who allocated an amount of sixty million US dollars to provide urgent aid to Somalia. He reiterated his gratitude to the countries and organizations that swiftly provided aid to Somalia. He noted that the situation in Somalia is extremely complex and requires an international help, stressing that the crisis in this country is beyond the potential of a single State or institution, adding that the Alliance which was announced by the OIC will be open to all international partners and will always be ready to work and cooperate closely with everyone in the affected areas in Somalia and even in other countries.
