Our greatest need in EU process is to be patient, Turkish chief negotiator says

ANKARA (A.A) - 24.03.2011 - Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator for European Union (EU) talks Egemen Bagis said Thursday that Turkey's EU process was more important than the result itself.
Speaking on Turkey and its EU process at the Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) on Thursday, Bagis said that Turkey's greatest need in the EU process was to be patient and resolved and to display politics that were consistent within the boundaries of principles.
Certain European countries just can not "accept" Turkey's economic growth. They place obstacles to Turkey and wonder what they can rip off from Turkey during the membership process, Bagis said.
The process is more important than the result itself. Turkey's EU process can not be implemented by politicians alone. Civil societies and industrialists have great responsibility in the process, Bagis said.
Turkey is a crucial country to solve Europe's problems. Our greatest need in the EU process is to be patient. We will win the hearts and minds of the Europeans. To date, we have opened 13 chapters out of a total of 33 to negotiations. Out of the 20 remaining chapters, 17 have not been opened to negotiations due to political obstacles. Once the political obstacles have been removed, we will be a country that has opened 29 chapters to negotiations and completed 13 chapters, Bagis said.
We make reforms based on our calendar. By the end of 2013, Turkey will be ready for full membership in the EU, Bagis said.
Our citizens have a crucial task in Turkey's EU process. We have to realize one fact. We can not change each other. We have to accept each other as we are. In this country of ours, the Alevis can not change the Sunnis, the rightists can not change the leftists, and Fenerbahce fans can not change the fans of Galatasaray. All of us should have different colors, different choices and different perspectives, Bagis said.
If we can accept each other as we are and cooperate under common ground and work together, we can reach our goal. As such, the national unity and brotherhood project is crucial. Once we establish coordination within ourselves, there is no reason why Turkey should not become the world's shining star, Bagis said.
Touching on the issue of visas, Bagis requested from the industrialists to be patient.
Visas will sooner or later disappear in the EU. EU's applying visa requirements to Turkish citizens is illogical and has no legal justification, Bagis said.
I want you industrialists to work very hard and earn lots of money. We are partners. One third of what you earn is the Turkish government's. As you get stronger, so do we, Bagis said.
Following his speech at ASO, Egemen Bagis presented certificates to 32 individuals who have completed a course on preparing projects according to the methodology of the EU.
