Outsiders’ plans for Persian Gulf region doomed to failure: Iranian general

TEHRAN,May 20(MNA) – A senior military advisor to the Supreme Leader said that any agreement on the Persian Gulf region made at the behest of outsiders is “doomed to failure.” Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, a former commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, made the remarks on Saturday in reference to a proposal for the formation of a union between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Persian Gulf Arab leaders, at a summit in Riyadh on May 14, weighed the issue of establishing a closer political union that could begin with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. However, they failed to make any concrete decision on forming the union. “Today, lasting peace and security could be established in the Middle East if Iran plays a leading role. And any agreement by the countries in the south of the Persian Gulf made at the behest of outsiders is doomed to failure because regional nations, including the brave Bahraini people, have gained awareness, and foreign powers and their elements cannot impose mechanisms on them and will undoubtedly face the regional people’s reaction.” Safavi staed.
