Peaceful process indispensable in Darfur - Lavrov

MOSCOW, April 14 (Itar-Tass) - Russia is ready to use U.N. targeted sanctions against those who prevent a peaceful process in Darfur, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
“It is necessary to convince the parties in Darfur to take part in the peaceful process,” Lavrov said on Monday.
“Russia welcomes active efforts taken by the African Union aimed at persuading leaders of armed groups to settle disagreements with the government by peaceful means,” he said.
“Moscow believes that the African Union should continue a leading role in inter-Sudan settlement based on the norms of international law,” Lavrov said.
“We’re ready to contribute to the process within our cooperation with Sudan and within the U.N. Security Council,” he said.
