PM to attend 4th Nuclear Security Summit

BANGKOK, March 29 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha will be traveling to Washington DC, the United States today to attend the 4th Nuclear Security Summit during March 31-April 1, together with national leaders and representatives from 52 countries and four international organizations. The Thai Government's website said his participation at the 4th Nuclear Security Summit is to affirm Thailand's joint intent with the global community to lay solid foundation for nuclear security and under significant cooperation frameworks and cooperation with international organizations. The Summit will be participated by national leaders and representatives from 52 countries and four international organizations, including US President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and representatives of 4 international organizations, namely, UN, International Atomic Energy Agency, INTERPOL, and the European Union (EU). At the meeting, 2016 Nuclear Security Summit Communique, and five Action Plans will be adopted to confirm Leaders' joint political will and guideline for future cooperation in promoting international nuclear security and reducing threat of nuclear terrorism, as well as proposals on cooperation direction between member countries and concerned international agencies/frameworks, i e, UN, International Atomic Energy Agency, INTERPOL, and EU. The adoption will be voluntary and in accordance with internal laws and regulations, and related international obligations. On this occasion, the Prime Minister will deliver speeches and attend joint discussions in 4 key agendas, that is, 1) Working Dinner on "Nuclear Security Perception"; 2) Plenary Session on "National Actions to Enhance Nuclear Security"; 3) Working Lunch on "International and Institutional Actions to Strengthen Nuclear Security and Scenario based Policy Discussion" and watching and discussing on movie simulating threats from nuclear terrorism. The Prime Minister will also accept Nuclear Industry Summit Awards for the recognition of Thailand's strong role at an international level to eliminate and ensure non-existence of highly enriched uranium in the country. Three ASEAN member countries, namely, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand are among 17 countries worldwide that are bestowed with the Awards. In addition, US-ASEAN Business Council and Chamber of Commerce will host dinner in honor of the Prime Minister. Attending the dinner are executives of US leading firms and public agencies in the fields of energy, medicine and chemical products, construction, and IT, as well as diplomatic corps, who will listen to the Prime Minister's briefing on visions, and progress of Thailand's economic and political reform. The Prime Minister will also meet with the Thais who work at IMF and World Bank to exchange views on economic mobilization under "People's State" policy and the 20-year National Strategy. (END)
