Russia deems Seleznyov’s detention Washington’s unfriendly step - FM

MOSCOW, July 8 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned detention of the Russian citizen, Roman Seleznyov, by the U.S. Special Service in the Maldives as Washington’s unfriendly step. Seleznyov was put on a private plane to the U.S. island of Guam. “It is not the first time that the U.S. kidnaps a Russian citizen ignoring the 1999 mutual legal assistance agreement,” said the Ministry. “The same thing happened to entrepreneur Viktor But and pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko who were forcefully taken out from third countries to the U.S. and convicted of doubtful charges.” The U.S did not only fail to inform Russia about the charges but also did not notify Russian consulates, as in the situation with Seleznyov, the Ministry said. The Duma Deputy Valery Seleznyov told Itar-Tass on Tuesday he would take measures to return the son back to Russia: “Kidnapping is a crime. The country must protect its citizens, and Roman should be able to go back to Russia.” The U.S. suspects the Russian citizen of stealing data about the U.S. citizens’ credit cards using malware in retail system computers.
