Russian diplomat calls to search for security guarantees for Pyongyang

MOSCOW, September 26. /TASS/. Russia believes it is necessary to give security guarantees to North Korea, and this may be done only by political and diplomatic means, Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Mikhail Ulyanov said. "North Korea has apparently come to a conclusion that the most certain means of ensuring security for it is to possess nuclear weapons and these missiles," Ulyanov said. "They really fear an attack from certain countries. In this situation, there is the need to look for some security guarantees that will suit Pyongyang. This may be done only by political and diplomatic means," he said. "Pyongyang is concerned about its security, it has seen what happened to Muammar Gaddafi (Libyan leader who was toppled and killed by rebel forces during a civil war in 2011) and has seen the statements on destroying the Iran nuclear deal," Ulyanov said. "Naturally, everything in the world is interconnected. Finally, these maneuvers [US and South Korean drills], why are they held near North Korea’s coast, are they meant to tease Pyongyang and provoke it to take any awkward steps?"
