Somchai’s removal will not affect EC’s work
BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) – The removal of Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn by Prime Minister’s order will not affect the operation of the Election Commission, said its chairman, Supachai Somcharoen.
The order, published in the Royal Gazette yesterday was effective immediately. EC chairman said that four remaining members could still continue their work as they make a valid quorum. The administration and management work is under the supervision of the EC secretariat.
There has been no problem, either concerning the order that allow EC chairman and commissioners, who reach the retirement age of 70 to continue their duties until new faces take office, he added.
Gen Prayut Chan-ocha in his capacity as head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) use his special powers under Article 44 of the interim Constitution to remove Somchai, EC commissioner from his post, citing his inappropriate behavior in speaking to the media about the election process and schedule.
His remarks may cause public confusion, which could obstruct the EC operation and organizing the election.
The order also said his application for the EC secretary-general is deemed as conflict of interest as he did not resign from his post as the EC commissioner.
Following the order, Somchai said he made comments for the national interest and was not aimed to please anyone.
He decided to apply for the EC secretary -general post because he is qualified.
He believed the EC would not appoint him for the new post as they know he might act against the wishes of those in power. After being dismissed from the his post at the EC, he would find something else to do for the benefit of the nation. (TNA)
