Syrians must determine their own destiny, Iran says

TEHRAN, Dec. 26 (MNA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said that Iran is opposed to the interference of Western countries in Syria, emphasizing the right of the Syrian people to determine their own destiny. Mehmanparast, who is leading a media delegation to Turkey, made the remarks on Monday in Ankara during a meeting with Murat Karakaya, director general of the Press and Information Department of the Turkish Prime Minister’s Office. “Ceasing the conflict, paving the way for holding national dialogue and holding free and fair election is the way out of the Syrian crisis,” he explained. Mehmanparast stated that the Western countries and Israel are seeking instability in Syria and that this situation serves their interests in the region. He also cautioned Middle Eastern countries against taking measures to facilitate a possible military intervention in Syria by the pro-Israeli Western states. For his part, Karakaya emphasized the importance of expanding ties between Tehran and Ankara and said, “Establishing peace and security in the region matters greatly to both countries (of Iran and Turkey).” He also pointed to the cultural and historical links between the two nations, saying, “Ankara is ready to expand its media relations and cooperation with Tehran.” Mehmanparast called Iran and Turkey two “important” and “influential” countries and said enhancing relations between the two nations could give rise to stability in the region. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mehmanparast commented on the current sensitive situation in the Middle East and said that the media play a leading role at this sensitive situation.
