'There should be no preconditions for restoring Tehran-Cairo ties'

TEHRAN, May 31 (MNA) – The director of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Assembly of the Islamic Awakening said that no preconditions should be set for restoring relations between Iran and Egypt. Ali Akbar Velayati made the remarks during a meeting with a number of Egyptian journalists in Tehran on Wednesday. “The restoration of official relations between the two countries should not be subject to any condition. The two countries will make decisions about restoring and expanding their official relationship which had been broken off,” he said when asked about the impact of ongoing political developments in Syria on efforts to mend relations between Iran and Egypt. Elsewhere in his remarks, he said, “Without establishing close relations between the governments and presidents of the two countries, the new era will not begin seriously.” The former foreign minister added, “Our government is completely ready to forge friendship with the Egyptian government.” On Iran’s response to the killing of people in Syria, the senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader said that the Islamic Republic is not content with the situation in the Arab country and will make every effort to help resolve the issue and prevent further bloodshed.
