Turkey carries out broadest evacuation effort in its history
ANKARA (A.A) - 23.02.2011 - Turkey's foreign minister said on Wednesday that Turkey carried out broadest evacuation effort in its history.
Ahmet Davutoglu said there were around 25,000 Turkish citizens in Libya, and the region was experiencing historic days.
"Turkey has evacuated 1,422 citizens from Tripoli by planes so far, and 429 others from Banghazi," Davutoglu told a press conference in Ankara.
Davutoglu said 248 Turkish citizens were brought back to homeland via Egypt, and Turkey had taken 3,000 other citizens from Banghazi port this morning.
"The number of citizens evacuated from Libya in the last 72 hours has reached 5,099," he said.
Davutoglu said two Turkish ferryboats departed Banghazi port for Turkey with 3,000 people at midnight.
The minister said Turkey would continue to bring its citizens from Libya back to homeland, and asked Turkish citizens who were currently in Libya not to panic, not to leave their places unless they had to, and to wait for an evacuation signal from Turkey.
Davutoglu said Turkey would start evacuating its citizens from Tripoli and other ports by ships after evacuation from Banghazi was completed.
The minister said 21 countries had officially applied to Turkey to help evacuate their citizens from Libya as Turkey was successfully bringing back its citizens to homeland, and Turkey would do its best to help other countries.
"There is a social activity in the entire region, and there are new problems and challenges," Davutoglu said.
Davutoglu said Turkey had pursued a principled policy from the outset as it was committed to global and regional peace.
The minister said Turkey's principled policy had three steps, and one of them was completion of the social transformation in a peaceful way and creation of a new order in the region.
"This social transformation should take into consideration demands of the nations," he said.
Davutoglu said the new order should respect to human rights, political participation, transparency.
Turkey's second priority was domestic peace of nations in the region, and solidarity with those nations, Davutoglu said.
Davutoglu said Turkey was concerned about the future of regional nations, and Turkey's third priority was to protect life security of Turkish citizens.
"We have tried to take action on the right time, and attached importance to our remarks so that they have a positive effect on domestic peace of these countries," he said.
Davutoglu said Turkey was careful about its remarks, initiatives and attitude so that they did not harm life security of its citizens and its strategic interests.
"Giving right messages on the right time, taking right steps and launching right initiatives are our prior targets," he said.
Davutoglu said Turkey wanted domestic peace to prevail in Libya as soon as possible. "This evacuation is not abandoning Libya, it is just to ensure security of Turkish citizens for a temporary period of time," he said.
Turkish foreign minister said Turkey would extend every type of assistance to Libyan people, and from now on ships that would go to Libya would be loaded with medicine and food.
Davutoglu said Turkish citizens would return to Libya after public order was ensured.
