Turkey expresses support to Syria's reform process
ANKARA (A.A) - 27.03.2011 - Turkey's foreign minister on Sunday called his Syrian counterpart and expressed support to the reform process in Syria.
Ahmet Davutoglu spoke to his Syrian counterpart Walid Mualem, and said Turkey was closely monitoring developments in Syria.
Foreign Minister Davutoglu expressed sorrow over loss of life and injuries in the ongoing incidents in friend and brother Syria.
Davutoglu's phone talk came after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.
"We see the investigation launched to find those responsible and to release the detainees as rightful steps," Davutoglu told Mualem.
Davutoglu said Turkey welcomed Syria's remarks that political, social and economic reforms had been launched to meet legitimate demands and expectations of the nation.
Turkey's foreign minister underlined importance of implementation of Syria's decisions as soon as possible, and sincerely supported steps to be taken to proceed in the reform process.
Davutoglu also said Turkey was ready to extend every type of support and contribute to Syria's reform process.
On March 25, media reports said Syrian troops opened fire on protesters in Daraa where thousands flooded Assad Square chanting for "freedom." The incidents later spread to other cities including Latakia. A number of people lost their lives in the protests.
