Turkey's diplomat says change in Mideast indicates democracy is universal

NEW YORK (A.A) - 13.04.2011 - A Turkish diplomat said on Tuesday that change in the Middle East indicated that democracy was universal.
Fazli Corman, Turkey's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), said that the winds of change in the Middle East indicated that democracy was universal, not peculiar to the West.
"The change also proved that the concept of clash of civilizations is not accurate," Corman said during a conference at Columbia University in New York.
Corman said recent developments in Mideast had occurred because people living in that geography demanded a better life.
Turkey had some concerns about what could happen in the wake of these developments in Middle Eastern countries because authority vacuum emerged after administrations collapsed in those countries, Corman said.
Corman also said international community should closely monitor the developments in that region.
