Turkish community in Germany celebrates holy month of Ramadan
WITTEN (A.A) - August 5, 2011 - The Turkish community living in Germany celebrates the holy month of Ramadan with a series of events.
Members of the Turkish community living in Germany's western city of Witten try to keep the Ramadan tradition alive by gathering at fast-breaking dinners.
Families break their fasts with traditional Turkish food prepared and served by a chef brought from Turkey at the Ramadan tents set up in the front yard of a mosque in Witten's Herbede town.
Speaking to AA on the events, Imam Halil Demir of the Herbede Mosque said that the tents aimed at bringing the Turkish community together and preserving the traditions of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting during which Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and other physical needs during the daylight hours.
Believed to be a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice; Ramadan is intended to teach people about patience, spirituality and humility.
