Turkish foreign trade minister presented with prize by Swiss organization
BRUSSELS (A.A) - 18.02.2011 - Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Caglayan was presented Friday with "Prix de la Fondation" by the Switzerland-based Crans Montana Forum at a ceremony held in Brussels.
Established in 1989, the Prix de la Fondation recognises people who are committed to social responsibility, contribute to global growth and development. Previous winners include U.S. President Barack Obama and Bahrain Queen Sheika Sabeeka Ibrahim Al Khalifa.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Caglayan said he received the prize on behalf of all members of "the Turkey's foreign trade family," adding that the prize was very meaningful in the sense that it showed Turkey's efforts to develop international trade were appreciated in the global arena.
"The improvement of the condition of the global economy hinges on avoiding protectionist policies, boosting international cooperation and removing barriers against trade," Caglayan said.
Caglayan said the global economic recession forced governments to take protectionist measures, adding that the ensuing drop in demand caused global trade to shrink by 23 percent to stand at 12.3 trillion USD in 2009 down from 16 trillion USD.
"I believe that good trade leads to good political relations. The higher the trade volumes between countries are the better will be their political relations ... 'Zero problem, trade without borders' is the motto of our foreign trade policy," Caglayan said.
The Turkish minister said developing countries could earn an extra of as high as 60 billion USD by lowering tariffs between themselves, which he said showed the necessity to remove barriers against global trade.
"And we need global participation and political will to remove those barriers if we want to avoid another global crisis," Caglayan said.
Caglayan also said Turkey eyed to reach an export volume of 132 billion USD in 2011.
Separately, the Turkish foreign trade minister met earlier with Vincent Van Quickenborne, Belgian Minister for Economy and Reform as well as with European Commission Vice-President Simm Kallas.
