Turkish frigate docks at Shanghai port to mark 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey, China
SHANGHAI (A.A) - August 1, 2011 - A frigate with the Turkish Naval Forces docked at a Shanghai port on Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.
The TCG Gemlik, one of the vessels within the Turkish naval fleet on a mission under a UN anti-piracy task force in the Gulf of Aden, and Turkish Admiral Sinan Ertugrul were welcomed in Shanghai by Chinese Colonel Wu Weihua.
The Turkish frigate will be available for public visit for four days before setting sail for Japan.
Turkish naval ships have been serving under the CTF-151, an international naval task force, set up in response to piracy attacks in shipping lanes off the coast of Somalia.
CTF-151 operates in the Gulf of Aden and off the eastern coast of Somalia covering an area of approximately 1.1 million square miles.
It is a multinational task force established in January 2009 under a United Nations Security Council resolution to conduct counterpiracy operations to actively deter, disrupt and suppress piracy in order to protect global maritime security and secure freedom of navigation.
