Turkish parliament speaker appreciates Finnish government's support for Turkey's EU process

ANKARA (A.A) - 29.03.2011 - Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin said Tuesday that he appreciated the Finnish government and parliament's constructive support to Turkey's European Union (EU) process.
Sahin met with the Finnish President Tarja Halonen in Ankara on Tuesday.
Halonen's visit has carried Turkish-Finnish relations to the highest level. The parliaments of Turkey and Finland have excellent cooperation, Sahin said.
I appreciate Finland's support to Turkey's EU process. Turkey received the candidate status during the term presidency of Finland, Sahin noted.
Turkey's only goal is full membership in the EU. Despite certain difficulties, the negotiations process goes on, Sahin said.
The Finnish Parliament is one of the leading parliaments in the world with the number of female deputies. The amount of female deputies in Turkey is about 9 percent. We are planning to increase this figure after the June 12 elections in Turkey, Sahin said.
The 6,500 Turks living in Finland have helped create a strong bond between Turkey and Finland. Turkish and Finnish troops serve together in Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Lebanon for world peace, Sahin also said.
Tarja Halonen, in her part, thanked Sahin for the "warm words".
The oldest Muslim minority in Finland happen to be the Tatars. Thanks to the immigrants, the number of Muslims in Finland has increased, Halonen said.
The Chairperson of the Finnish-Turkish Friendship Group (at the Finnish Parliament) is a former priest. I hope that the friendship groups of our countries will continue close relations in the future, Halonen said.
Touching on economic relations between Turkey and Finland, Halonen said that the success of Turkish businesspeople in Finland would reflect positively on our bilateral relations.
Turkish and Finnish troops serve together in Kosovo, Bosnia and Afghanistan. I hope that we can also cooperate in Northern Africa, Halonen said.
42 percent of all deputies in the Finnish Parliament are females. We want to increase this amount to 50 percent soon, Halonen also said.
Sahin later hosted a luncheon in honor of Halonen and her delegation.
