Turkish people to elect their lawmakers on June 12
ANKARA (A.A) - 26.04.2011 - Higher Board of Election (YSK) Chairman Ali Em has said that 50.1 million citizens in Turkey and 2.5 million in foreign countries would cast votes in the upcoming general elections on June 12.
Holding a press conference on Tuesday, Em said that 15 political parties would join the elections, and the total number of candidates of these parties was 7,492. He added that the number of independent parliamentarians was 203.
Em said that there were 50,189,930 electors in Turkey, and 2,568,977 in foreign countries.
There will be 199,207 ballot boxes, he added.
Turkish people will elect 550 new members of the Parliament on June 12.
The election process officially started on March 14.
For the first time in the history of Turkey, those at the age of 25 will be able to run candidacy to become parliamentarian in this year's elections under an amendment to the Article 76 of the Constitution in 2006.
The dark wooden ballot boxes traditionally used in elections in Turkey will vanish this year. YSK has already ordered new ballot boxes made out of hard plastic that will be transparent, unbreakable and resistant to heat.
There are changes in polling booths. The booths will be covered with fabrics so that the person in the booth will not be seen. The sizes of the envelopes also changed under the new law.
The new law enables political parties to make propaganda for two hours in publicly open places also after sunset. Propaganda time in billboards also changed and extended from 20 days to 30 days.
Fifteen political parties will join the elections on June 12. The list of political according to their places on ballot papers is as follows:

6- Liberal Democrat Party
7- Felicity Party
8- Rights & Equality Party
9- People's Voice Party

YSK determined the number of deputies to be elected in the June ballot on the basis of population recording system. Accordingly, number of deputies to be elected from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Gaziantep, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Antalya, Tekirdag, Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Van, Sirnak and Kayseri increased. Istanbul will send 15 more deputies this year. On the other hand, number of deputies to be elected from Afyonkarahisar, Konya, Tokat, Trabzon, Yozgat, Agri, Aydin, Bitlis, Cankiri, Corum, Edirne, Erzincan, Erzurum, Giresun, Isparta, Mersin, Kastamonu, Kirsehir, Kutahya, Malatya, Ordu, Sinop, Sivas, Aksaray, Bayburt, Karaman, Kirikkale and Karabuk decreased.

Republican People's Party (CHP) came the second, winning 20.8 percent of votes and 112 seats in the parliament. Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) collected 14.3 percent of votes and 71 seats.
