ACCRA (A.A) - 24.03.2011 - Turkish President Abdullah Gul addressed Ghana's Parliament on Thursday.
Gul said that he was paying the first visit on presidential level from Turkey to Ghana, recalling that Ghana was the first country which declared independence in sub-Saharan Africa in 1957 that made the country a model for other African peoples.
Noting that Turkey was determined to develop relations with Africa on the basis of friendship, equality and cooperation, Gul said that Turkey had been implementing an opening policy towards Africa since 1998 which targeted to diversify and deepen political, military, economic and cultural cooperation.
Gul said that this policy included health, agriculture, irrigation, energy, education and regular humanitarian aid.
He noted that there were wide cooperation areas between rapidly developing African countries and Turkey which was world's 16th and Europe's 6th biggest economy. Gul said that Turkey strengthened ties with Africa thanks to the activities of non-governmental organizations and Turkish International Cooperation & Development Agency (TIKA) which fulfilled projects in 37 African countries.
Noting that Turkey had 22 embassies in Africa, Gul said that this would increase to 32 next year, adding that Turkey's opening new representations in Africa showed the importance it attached to relations with African countries.
Gul said that the trade volume between Turkey and Ghana, which was 27 million USD in 1998, almost reached 300 million USD in 2010. He added that Turkey imported products worth of 190 million USD from Ghana, and exported 110 million USD to that country.
