Tehran, Sept 16, IRNA -- UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, said on Sunday that there are more than six million Syrians in desperate need of relief aid. Addressing a press conference, Amos said humanitarian issue in Syria is an important subject. “There are now 6.8 people in the country in need of emergency aid.” She said based on latest news received from the UN forces in Syria, the health, sanitation, infrastructures and welfare facilities as well as other institutions in major parts of the country are ruined. All these events and displacement of millions of Syrians have worried UN, she added. “The UN along with other humanitarian organizations try to provide accommodation and emergency medicare centers for the war-hit people in Syria.” Elsewhere in the interview, Amos said there are more than 3,500 UN forces in Syria and through their efforts three million Syrians are provided with food, health and emergency aid. “The group of relief aid workers, however, need more donations by other countries,” she said. Referring to many problems facing relief operation in Syria, she said based on latest news received from the country, the UN relief aid workers should soon travel between Damascus and Aleppo with 50 check points that are now under control of the government and opposition forces so as to extend help to the Syrian people. She went on to say that Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq have now received a large number of Syrian refugees. She asked Iran to offer humanitarian assistance to Syrians. “In a meeting with Iran foreign minister I asked her to use Iran influence on Syria to offer humanitarian assistance to people of the country more easily.” /end
