UN Syria envoy highlights importance of talks with Iran

TEHRAN,Sept.26(MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi held a meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi, the new UN-Arab League joint special envoy on Syria, in New York on Monday.
During the meeting, Brahimi emphasized the importance of holding consultations with Iran to help resolve the situation in Syria.
He also announced that he will travel to Iran in the near future.
In addition, Brahimi described the recent trips made by the Iranian foreign minister to Cairo and Damascus as “important” and “constructive” and said that the aggravation of the crisis in Syria will affect the entire region.
During the meeting, Salehi stated, “We believe that the resolution of the Syrian issue is possible only through the coordination of efforts of various sides.”
He added that the violence, the shipment of weaponry to extremist groups, and foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs should be stopped and national dialogue should be held.
Salehi also said that Iran will support Brahimi throughout his mission.
