UNSC Chief Rejects Any Military Solution To Syrian Problem

New York, July 14, IRNA – The UN Security Council Chairman Néstor Osorio stressed the need for sustained international efforts to establish peace in Syria. In an exclusive interview with IRNA, he said repeating the Libyan scenario once again for Syria is impossible because even thinking of any military action will be very dangerous and of vague consequences. Colombia’s permanent representative to the international body whose country presently holds the presidency of the council, stressed Iran’ role as an important regional player in the settlement of the Syrian crisis. He reiterated that there are a number of very sensitive issues to be taken into consideration in Syria because any wrong decision will be of very adverse and dangerous consequences for the region. That is why, he added, many UNSC member states have declined to approve military options for Syria in the past several months. On the achievements of the visits of the UN and Arab League especial envoy to Syria, Osorio pointed to Iran’s strategic and decisive role in Syria and the influential and important part it can take there. Saying that the top priority for the UNSC is to stop violence in Syria in the first place and then hold talks with all involved groups, he said there have been only little achievements so far./end
