U.S. senior diplomat says United States expects Turkey, Armenia to ratify protocols

ANKARA (A.A) - 13.04.2011 - The senior U.S. diplomat in Turkey said on Wednesday that the United States expected Turkey and Armenia to ratify protocols.
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone said Turks and Armenians, together with experts from third countries, should launch an academic study on their common history.
Turks and Armenians should cooperate to solve their problem, Ricciardone said as he met members of Diplomacy Reporters Association (DMD) over breakfast in Ankara.
Ricciardone said no democracy could be successful without a free press, and there was hope for the future, whatever the current situation was, as long as the media continued to do its job professionally, energetically and with courage.
The ambassador quoted Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying that it was not possible to talk about democracy in a place lacking freedom of expression.
The United States was of the same opinion with Turkish executives on principles, he said.
Ricciardone said Turkey would find its own path to ensure public order and freedom of expression, and hoped that this path would be west-oriented and would raise standards.
Ricciardone said his country would stand by democracy and human rights advocates irrespective of in which part of the world they were.
The ambassador said Turkey always progressed in its democracy history despite some downs and ups. Referring to the upcoming June general elections, the ambassador said the political parties took into consideration the needs of the society and nominated more young people and women as candidate lawmakers.
Ricciardone said Turkey would itself decide on what was best for itself when commenting on presidential system discussions.
On Turkey's roadmap regarding Libya, Ricciardone said Turkey's voice was heard not only in NATO but also the United Nations (UN) and the issue would be taken up in Doha, Qatar the same day.
Ricciardone defined Turkey's influence and role in the region as positive.
The ambassador described Turkish-U.S. relations as fairly fruitful, positive and strategic, and said two countries were close and in continuous contact and consultation.
Ricciardone said two countries could have different views about some issues, and Turkey could have different perspective on Iran and Syria as it was a neighbor of those countries.
The U.S. diplomat said Turkish-Israeli relations were important for the region, and had an impact on the peace, stability and welfare in the Mediterranean.
Turkey and Israel should establish good communication with each other as two strong democracies and two close friends of the United States, he said.
Ricciardone also said the United States attached importance to recovery of Turkish-Israeli relations, and encouraged them.
