West should offer Iran greater relief from sanctions: article

TEHRAN,Dec.26(MNA) – Some experts are now urging the West to put forward a broader deal that would offer Iran far greater relief from sanctions and an eventual end to diplomatic isolation in return for scaling down its nuclear program, the New York Times said in an article published on Monday. A new round of negotiations between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) over the country’s nuclear program is expected to be held in the near future. However, no decision has yet been made on the date and venue of the talks. The major powers have demanded that Iran halt 20 percent enrichment of uranium, shut down the Fordo uranium enrichment facility, and ship all of its stocks of 20 percent enriched uranium out of the country. Iran’s main demand is that its right to uranium enrichment, as enumerated in the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, be recognized. The New York Times said that after a six-month hiatus, the United States and other major powers were trying to resume negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, adding that it was imperative for all sides to make every effort to reach a diplomatic solution in view of the fact that Israel had threatened military strikes if Iran’s nuclear activities were not halted by next spring or early summer. The article entitled ‘Another try at nuclear negotiations’ added that it was unclear whether the six major powers would put a serious offer on the table. The last round of negotiations in Moscow in June collapsed when Iran rejected a proposal to stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity. American officials now say that when negotiations resume, the major powers will offer a somewhat modified version of their original proposal that includes some new relief if Iran takes additional steps to curb its program. They say they would be prepared to discuss a more extensive proposal if Iran showed real interest in negotiating seriously, according to the newspaper. The article concluded that whatever package was offered had to include meaningful relief from sanctions or there would be no incentive for Iran to do anything.
