World's parliaments' responsibilities doubled due to spreading terror, extremism: Speaker of Federal National Council

LUSAKA, 20th March 2016 (WAM) -- Speaker of the UAE's Federal National Council, Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, has said that the responsibilities of international parliamentary bodies have doubled due to the spread of terrorism, crises and escalating global and regional political and security tensions, which threaten the security and stability of all peoples.
She was speaking ahead of participating in the 134th International Parliamentary Union Assembly, which will be hosted by the Zambian Parliament in Lusaka from 19th-23rd March. The delegation she leads will also participate in the meetings of the 198th Session of the IPU's Governing Council.
The IPU assembly will identify seek to ways to reverse low voter turnouts and a waning youth interest in formal politics, explore innovative ideas that enhance and modernise democratic culture, institutions and practices, ensure lasting protection against destruction and deterioration for the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In addition to a general debate on rejuvenating democracy and giving voice to youth, parliamentarians will discuss the need for enhanced global cooperation against the threat to democracy and individual rights.
Al Qubaisi said all parliaments should co-ordinate about pursuing policies aimed at protecting people, combatting terrorism and extremism and promoting stability and sustainable development.
"Due to the highly-complicated regional and international situations, which are spreading, ramifying and impacting parliamentary and governmental responsibilities, there should be a unified parliamentary vision for developing national legislations and international pacts to curb terrorism and extremism," she added. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395293059875.html
