Qatar's Permanent Representative to UN Participates in Global Futures Forum

New York, March 22 (QNA) - In the context of their role as facilitators of government consultations to draft the political declaration of the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alya bint Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani participated along with HE Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations Fergal Mythen in a discussion on the role of civil society in the Sustainable Development Goals Summit and Summit of the Future. This took place during the Global Futures Forum organized by the Alliance for the United Nations We Need, with the participation of a number of officials and personalities from civil society.
In her speech, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations said that the challenges facing the world are intertwined, and therefore, member states must work together in an interdependent manner in order to address these challenges, adding that the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development is necessary for survival.
Regarding "our common agenda" which resulted from a request by member states to HE the Secretary-General of the United Nations to provide a roadmap that takes into account the priorities of countries in implementing the sustainable development plan, Her Excellency deemed "our common agenda" as complementary to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and the Paris agreement rather than competing with them.
Within the framework of the sustainable development summit due to be held in September 2023, Her Excellency said that the summit will mark the halfway point in the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, as world leaders will conduct a comprehensive review of the status of the sustainable development goals, respond to the impact of the multiple crises facing the world, and provide policy guidance on the transformative and accelerated actions needed to achieve the sustainable development goals.
She noted that the Sustainable Development Goals Summit and Summit of the Future are closely linked, and both can prove that strengthening institutions and the global cooperation approach can enhance national capabilities, which helps achieve the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, the Paris agreement, and other important processes such as Doha Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries.
The Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations added these important, distinct and integrated processes require the support of civil society and organizations such as the Alliance for the United Nations We Need and other stakeholders in order to achieve success and build the desired future.
