Regional Tax & Investment Conference 2023 Empowers Cross-Border Trade And Investment
KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 (Bernama) -- The Regional Tax & Investment Conference 2023 empowers cross-border trade and investment in the region, where intra-Asean investment amounted to US$21 billion in 2021. (US$1 = RM4.41)
Jointly organised by Taylor’s and TraTax, the one-day March 21, 2023 conference attracted attendees from across Southeast Asia including regional tax specialists, C-suite executives, researchers, academics and policy makers, among others.
In a statement, the organisers said the conference equipped attendees with insights into investment trends and tax developments across the region with an emphasis on cross-border investment and trade to empower well-governed regional growth for organisations.
“This focus resonates with current regional market opportunities, with the Finance Ministry undersecretary of tax division Datuk Che Nazli Jaapar noting during the conference that intra-Asean investment amounted to US$21 billion in 2021 with Malaysia being the second largest source country for this type of foreign direct investments," it said in a statement Tuesday.
Meanwhile, during the conference, TraTax partner Thenesh Kannaa said that the industry’s landscape is in a flux and there are many vital observations and important conversations to be had that could pave the way forward for businesses, the nation and ASEAN as a whole.
"(Take) for instance, tax policies. I believe the Malaysian Government is now on a good track with its approach to making preliminary announcements on tax policies and initiating consultations with stakeholders prior to implementation, particularly in reference to the recent proposals for capital gains tax, luxury goods tax and voluntary disclosure,” he added.
The conference featured 11 regional tax industry experts including representatives from Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.
Topics covered included an overview of tax considerations in cross-border investments and transactions, investment trends and requirements in ASEAN, regional tax developments, global minimum tax and sustainability, 2023 Malaysian budget tax updates as well as regional indirect tax updates.
