Anniversary of interplanetary station

Almaty, 06 January 2008, (Khabar) - 50 years ago the first interplanetary station called “Luna-1” was launched. 50 years ago the first successful launching of the automatic interplanetary station called “Luna-1” was carried out from the Baikonur space launch facility. The automatic interplanetary station was put into a flight path to the Moon with the help of a “Vostok” carrier rocket. “Luna-1” became the first spacecraft in history to pass in the immediate proximity of the satellite of the Earth. Six thousand kilometers separated its surface from the interplanetary station.
The main objective of the flight was to reach the Moon surface which wasn’t accomplished due to automation failure. However, thanks to this flight, the external radiation belt of the Earth was discovered and solar wind measurements were carried out as well. Scientists also found out that the Moon doesn’t have a magnetic field. The flight of the “Luna-1” interplanetary station became the first in a series of similar launchings in its own right. There were over 25 of them. The interest in studying the Moon with the assistance of interplanetary stations has grown again lately. It is suggested that in 2010 or in 2011 the Russian “Luna-Globe” spacecraft will set off for the moon from the Baikonur space launch facility.
