Four Malaysian Young Scientists To Attend Nobel Laureate Meeting In Germany

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- Four Malaysian young scientists, comprising three lecturers and a PhD student, have been selected to attend the Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany from June 30 to July 5. Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) president Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said three of them were chemistry lecturers from Universiti Malaya (UM), Dr Woi Pei Meng, Dr Irene Ling and Noor Idayu Mat Zahid, and a final-year chemistry PhD student, Sivasangar Seenivasagam from Universiti Putra Malaysia. "They were among 54 local scientists under 35 years old who went through a rigorous selection programme by ASM, which is responsible for finding and selecting young scientists to participate in the meeting," he told reporters, here, Thursday. He said the Malaysian delegation would be led by ASM senior fellow, Professor Emeritus Dr V.G. Kumar Das. "Since 2004, Malaysia has sent 42 young scientists to participate in the annual meeting in Lindau, for the purpose of enabling them to interact with scientists from around the world, especially with the Nobel Prize winners. The 63th programme which will gather 35 Nobel Prize winners and 600 young scientists from 80 countries to discuss the researches that they are doing, especially in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine. Ahmad Tajuddin also announced that three post-graduate chemistry students from local universities had been selected to participate in the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) Summer Student Programme in Geneva, Switzerland for eight weeks from this Monday to Aug 30. They are Nurfikri Norjoharuddeen from UM, Hoh Siew Yan from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Dhiyauddin Ahmad Fauzi from the International Islamic University Malaysia. Ahmad Tajuddin said the three would work with international scientists to conduct research in several areas of global challenge studies. Meanwhile, Dr Woi described his selection with three others for the Lindau meeting, as a golden opportunity to share experiences and ideas with the world's leading scientists, who are also Nobel laureates. -- BERNAMA
