Social justice cornerstone of Bahrain's comprehensive development process: Labour Minister

Geneva, June 8 (BNA): Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, Labour and Social Development Minister and Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) Board of Directors Chairman, has affirmed that consolidating social justice, improving living conditions, and promoting dialogue are an integral part of Bahrain’s comprehensive development process, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The minister made the statements while addressing at the 111th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), held in Switzerland on June 5-16.
He indicated that based on the lofty principles of social justice, the Government of Bahrain has launched a series of well-thought-out policies and programmes to support low-income segments, such as the Insurance against Unemployment system, the wage support scheme, subsidies of goods and services, in addition to the provision of financial aid for needy groups.
He said that Bahrain is proud of its achievements in advancing social protection, as well as in its comprehensive initiatives to combat discrimination at work, forced labour and human trafficking.
He also expressed Bahrain's pride in its experience in promoting trade union freedoms, strengthening cooperation among social partners in accordance with the principles of constructive dialogue aimed at protecting the rights of workers and their gains without prejudice to the interests of employers.
He highlighted Bahrain’s efforts to protect the labour market during the COVID-19 pandemic, citing its success in providing health, financial, and social support to its affiliates, as well as in preventing layoffs and job losses during exceptional circumstances.
The minister praised the report of Gilbert Houngbo, ILO’s Director-General, for focusing on the importance of social justice and preserving human rights, as well as strengthening educational, health care, and social security systems.
