China Halts Malaysia's Hopes In Suhandinata Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's junior badminton squad failed in their bid to repeat the success in 2011 after losing 0-3 to defending champion, China in the final match of the World Junior Mixed Team Badminton Championship held at Bilbao Arena in Spain on Sunday. The win saw China claiming their team event title or better known as the Suhandinata Cup for the 11th time after having emerging victorious in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Three-time runner-up, Indonesia finished in third place by edging Taiwan 3-1 in the 3rd/4th classification match. In the match against China, Malaysia were trailing after Chen Tang Jie/M. Thinaah lost 21-17, 13-21 and 12-21 to He Jiting/Du Yue in the mixed doubles, said the tournament website;www.bilbao2016.badminton.es. Sun Feixiang doubled up the lead for China by edging Leong Jun Hao;21-15 and 21-13 in the boys singles before Chen Yufei delivered the winning point after scoring a hard-fought 22-20, 14-21 and 21-8 win over reigning world junior champion, Goh Jin Wei in the girls singles. For the record, Malaysia won the Suhandinata Cup in 2011 by defeating South Korea 3-0 beside emerging as runner-up in 2009 after losing 0-3 to China in the final match. --BERNAMA
