Chong Wei To Lead Malaysia's Challenge At Sudirman Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Former world number one, Lee Chong Wei, will lead Malaysia's challenge at the Sudirman Cup in Dongguan, China, from May 10-17. Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost Hansen said he was very pleased to have Chong Wei back in contention. "We have selected Chong Wei as captain, with Tan Wee Kiong and Vivian Hoo the vice captains," he told reporters here Tuesday. The BAM has named a 14-member team for the Sudirman Cup. Chong Wei and Cheam June Wei (back-up) are down for men's singles, with Tee Jing Yi and Lim Yin Fun (back up) slated for the women's event. The men's doubles line-up comprises Tan Wee Kiong, Goh V Shem and Mak Hee Chun (back up), with Vivian Hoo, Woon Khe Wei and Amelia Anscelly (back up)being the women's entry. The mixed doubles has Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and Wong Fai Yin /Chow Mei Kuan in the fray. Frost said that BAM had chosen a more compact team for the Sudirman Cup. Commenting on the young players selected, he said June Wei and Yin Fun had shown their prowess in training and during the selection process. "We have and need to start fielding young and new players in competitions. It is also important to give them a chance to play in the bigger tournaments. Even if they do not play, they are still part of the team," he added. For the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia has been drawn in Group 1D with three-time champions South Korea and India. "We need to at least beat India in the group round to move into the quarterfinal," said Frost. Hendrawan and Jeremy Gan are the Sudirman Cup coaches, while a centralised training camp will be held over three-days from May 3. -- BERNAMA
