European Qualifiers World Cup 2022 Qatar: Serbia and Cyprus Take Wins Today

Baku, March 3 (QNA) - Serbia take top spot in group A of the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after its victory over their hosts Azerbaijan, 2-1 today, in the third round of the qualifiers. This is the second victory for Serbia in the qualifiers, making them lead the group with 7 points, three points ahead of Portugal, play against Luxembourg later tonight. On the other hand, Azerbaijan suffered its second loss from Portugal, 1-0, in the first round thus staying last on the group without points. Aleksandr Mitrovic opened the score for Serbia, with a goal in the 16th minute, then Emin Makhmodov of Azerbaijan drew from a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Nine minutes before the end, Mitrovic scored the second goal for him and Serbia. In a second match in the same qualifiers, Cyprus won its first victory by beating its Slovenian guests 1-0 in the Group H matches. Cyprus owes credit for this victory to Ionis Petas, who scored the decisive goal in the 42nd minute. The Cyprus national team raised its score to four points in second place, one point ahead of fourth-placed Slovenia. (QNA)
