Fina Diving World Meet In Malaysia's Sarawak Region Attracts Eight Countries

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), Oct 15 (Bernama) — Eight countries will sending their divers to the 2016 Fina Diving World Series at the Sarawak Aquatic Centre, Petra Jaya from Oct 21 to 23. Sarawak State Sports Council director Dr Ong Kong Swee said China would be sending 12 divers, including those who were in action at the recent Rio Olympic Games. He said host Malaysia would be fielding 10 divers including Olympic silver medalist, Cheong Jun Hong. Meanwhile, he said the United States would have six divers, Canada (five), Australia (four) while Hong Kong, Singapore and Russia would have two divers each. "This is the first time this world standard event is being outside of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and we believe competition will be stiff as all countries are sending their top divers," Ong told a media conference here Friday. However, according to Ong, national diving champion Pandelela Rinong who is still nursing an injury would not be taking part in the competition. Also present at the media conference yesterday were Sarawak Youth, Sports and Solidarity Ministry assistant secretary Usop Kilat and technical coordinator Anthony Kong. -- BERNAMA
