Global Celebration for the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development
Doha, April 07 (QNA) - The International Center for Sports Security, based in Doha, organized today a celebration of the anniversary of the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development, which falls on April 6 of each year.
The current year celebration came in the context of the United Nations Global Program for Securing Major Sports Events and Promoting Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism, a program launched by the United Nations Office on Counter-Terrorism in June 2019 in partnership with the International Center for Sports Security, the United Nations Office for the Alliance of Civilizations and the United Nations Institute for Crime Research. And justice (UNICRA).
The International Center for Sports Security, the technical implementer of the UN program, organized through the "Save the Dream" global celebration program in cooperation with UN organizations and with the participation of representatives from several countries (Qatar, Britain, Sri Lanka and Egypt), where a major interactive discussion session was held under the title "Rebuilding Societies Later." COVID-19 and leveraging young athletes to prevent and combat violent extremism.
The observers participated by asking their questions in an interactive session moderated by a specialist in project management, Brian Van Harver, at the United Nations Office of the Alliance of Civilizations, and the discussion centered on the role of youth in preventing and combating violent extremism through sport. The Director of the "Generation Amazing" program Jassim Al-Khoury took part at the event as he reviewed the recent achievements of the program in the context of strengthening capabilities in the region and building a sustainable legacy resulting from Qatar's organization of the first World Cup in the Middle East.
Champion of the modern quintet, Aya Madani, also participated in the discussion session, who talked about the role of sportswomen in building capacities, enlightening and enhancing the role of women through sport.
This celebration comes within the framework of the general context of the United Nations Global Program for Securing Major Sports Events and Promoting Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism. (QNA)
