Lekhwiya and Al Wakra in Qatar Stars Cup Semifinal Tomorrow
Doha, February 25 (QNA) -- The hunger for titles for Qatar Stars League (QSL) defending champions Lekhwiya will be put to test by Al Wakra in the semifinal of the Qatar Stars Cup on Sunday.
Lekhwiya, who won the QSL title in their maiden appearance last season, are leading the QSL points standings after 17 rounds and look set to retain their title. Coached by Djamel Belmadi, Lekhwiya are considered the top side in Qatar but they must cross the Al Wakra hurdle in bid to qualify for the March 1 final.
Lekhwiya, who will appear in the AFC Champions League from next month, qualified for the semifinals by winning four of the five Group A matches played in December.
Rivals Al Wakra finished second in Group B, winning two matches besides managing a couple of draws. Al Wakra, coached by Adnan Darjal, impressed with wins over Al Jaish and Al Khor.
Al Wakra lost just one match in the preliminary stage against Al Gharafa.
Al Wakra lost to Al Gharafa in week 17 to finish in 5th spot on the QSL points chart. Lekhwiya played a goalless draw against Qatar SC in their last fixture. The match to be played at Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium, promises to be a thriller as Lekhwiya look to their first final in the Qatar Stars Cup. Al Wakra with firepower provided by tireless striker Younis Mahmood will look to deliver for fans starved of a trophy in the southern city. (QNA)
