Malaysian Goh/Tan Cruise Into Quarterfinals Of Korea Open
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Rio Olympics silver medalists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong continued their smashing performance by cruising into the quarterfinals of the Korea Open Super Series Badminton Tournament held at the Seong-nam Indoor Stadium in Seoul on Thursday.
The fifth seeded pair edged Peter Briggs/Tom Wolfenden of England 21-17, 21-16 in their second round men's doubles match, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Series website www.bwfworldsuperseries.com.
Another Rio Olympics silver medal winning pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying also made it to the last eight after disposing Kim Duk Young/Kim Hye Rin of South Korea 21-17, 21-16 in the mixed doubles.
Malaysia's professional men's doubles pair Hoon Thien How/Teo Kok Siang, however, failed to progress to the next round after losing 21-17, 13-21, 9-21 to young Chinese pair Huang Kaixiang/Wang Yilyu in another second round match.
The country's challenge in the men's singles, fizzled out after the only player left standing, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin was beaten by Qiao Bin of China 13-21, 19-21 in straight sets.
For the record, Malaysia's interest in the women's doubles had after Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei lost 9-21, 21-13, 18-21 to Go Ah Ra/Kim Hyang Im of South Korea in their opening round match, on Wednesday.
Malaysia did not send representatives in the women's singles of the US$600,000 (RM2.477 million) tournament.
Men's singles World number one Lee Chong Wei, still fresh from winning his sixth Japan Open Super Series title, withdrew from the tournament to focus on the Denmark Open Premier Super Series from Oct 18-23 and French Open Super Series from Oct 25-30.
