Melaka Has Potential To Be Premier Sports Tourism Destination

MELAKA, April 8 (Bernama) -- Melaka has the potential to become a sporting destination as it is often the location for various sports events at state and international levels, as well as its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. State Communications, Multimedia, Non-Government Organisations (NGO), Youth and Sports Development Committee chairman, Kerk Chee Yee said the sports tourism industry would have a considerable impact on Melaka including a sustainable economic and sports development. "Melaka is often the location for the organisations of prestigious sports programmes including the 2019 Le Tour de Langkawi (2019 LTdL) where Sunday Dataran Pahlawan is one of the stops for this event that is mostly participated by cyclists from outside the country. "It became a catalyst for Melaka to become a sport tourism destination and simultaneously become the focus of international sports in the future, but orderly and consistent plannings must be done to realise this aspiration," he told reporters at the second stage finish of the 2019 LTdL at Dataran Pahlawan here, Sunday. Commenting further, he said he often held discussions and exchanged ideas with the leaders of other states in an effort to improve both initiative and effort towards a more sustainable and excellent sports development. -- BERNAMA
